Motoring Tips - AIG

Things you must know
There are some important points that you should be aware of if you are involved in an accident or if your car is stolen.
What to do in the event of an accident
Give your name, address and insurance details to the other party who is involved in the same accident.
Get the name, address, phone number, vehicle registration and any other information from the other driver(s), passenger(s), witness (es) and any attending police officer(s) at the scene of accident.
Note the exact location and any relevant road signs or markings.
If injury is involved and you did not give your details at the scene, report the incident to the police within 24 hours after the accident.
Have your vehicle towed to the nearest police station and subsequently to one of our panel workshops.
You must telephone us as soon as possible within 24 hours after the accident to report the accident.
What to do if your vehicle is stolen or suffers theft related damage
Report the theft to the police immediately and take note of the police officer's name and obtain a copy of the report.
You must telephone us as soon as possible and within 24 hours after the theft to report the incident.
Tips To Safeguard Your Vehicle Against Theft
Car theft is a serious problem in Malaysia. We have gathered some tips to share with you. Amongst the most interesting findings on how cars are stolen are as follows:
Keys in the ignition!
Reminder: Never leave your car unlocked and unattended even for a second while running a quick errand at the grocery stores, to the ATM, or pick up your kids from across the road. Make sure all means of entry to your vehicle are shut tight.
Vehicles are towed away.
Tip: Park your car with wheels turned towards the curb or to the side at driveways and parking lots. This makes it difficult for thieves to tow your car away.
Non activated Security Alarm:
Reminder: Use it. The siren, horn or lights works effectively to frighten the thief away.
Did not have any anti-theft device.
Reminder: Install an immobilizer. A small investment upfront will save you from major inconveniences in the event of theft.
No etching of vehicle number on car windows and major parts.
Tips: A preventive measure that is cheap. By marking your vehicle, you assist police in identifying your car.
Car hijack at the traffic lights!
Reminder: When driving your car, keep your doors locked and windows rolled up. Stay alert!
Cars stolen from a remote and quiet road or parking lot.
Reminder: Park in well-lighted areas with pedestrian traffic.
Don't Be The Target Of Car Thieves
Leaving coins for parking, sunglasses, briefcases, gym bags, keys and parking tickets visible will attract thieves to your car.
Always place your valuables in the trunk. Out of sight, out of mind.
Always lock your car doors and windows.
8 Tips On Personal Safety
When you are driving or walking to your car, be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to any suspicious people near your car.
After office hours, ladies are advised not to walk alone to their cars parked in office buildings or shopping complexes. Always get someone to accompany you to your car if you work late.
Check the back seat of your car before you enter. After getting into your car, close all windows and lock all doors.
If there is another driver harassing you, engaging you to race or to stop his/her car in front of you, keep driving, slow down and do not provoke or challenge him / her. Avoid confrontations.
If you get lost especially at night, call someone via your mobile phone or go to the nearest petrol station or shop to ask for directions. Do not stop your car and / or turn on the hazard light. You will only draw attention to your situation and invite trouble.
While driving, if you feel that your car has been deliberately hit by another, do not stop. This is a common tactic used by robbers to make drivers stop their car before robbing them. Try to note the type of vehicle and vehicle registration number for purposes of making a police report.
Never leave your car engine running unattended especially when you intend to make a quick visit at convenience stores or petrol stations.
Never leave your young children inside an unlocked car unattended.

Windscreen Repair Vs Windscreen Replacement
"Windscreen Repair Against Windscreen Replacement"
You are advised to repair your damaged windscreen instead of replacing it for the following reasons:
1. Original windscreen will not be removed as replacement of windscreen may affect manufacturer's rubber seal;
2. Lifetime repair warranty by our panel workshop, Glass Mechanic Sdn. Bhd. ;
3. Replacement of windscreen effectively terminates your windscreen insurance coverage. However, by repairing your windscreen, your insurance coverage continues.
Did you know that certain "COMMON PRACTICES" may jeopardise or affect your rights to a claim?
Non-disclosure of change in risk exposure e.g. modifications to the vehicle.
Using private cars to carry fare-paying passengers.
If you leave your car engine running, unattended and unlocked, this could be construed as negligence and affect your rights to recovery.
Another example of negligence would be letting potential buyer to test drive your vehicle without your presence.
SO, BEWARE. PROMPLTLY INFORM US ABOUT ANY CHANGE TO RISK EXPOSURE AT ALL TIMES.

e-INSURANS - General

The electronic cover notes system under JPJ eINSURANS is part of the e-Government initiative undertaken by the Ministry of Transport for road tax renewal. With effect from 2 January 2005, insurance companies and takaful operators will transmit motor insurance/takaful information electronically to the Road Transport Department (RTD) and policy owners will receive confirmation slip from their insurance companies/takaful operators/agents as proof of insurance/takaful purchase. Upon confirmation of successful transmission by insurance company/takaful operator/agent concerned, policy owners will then proceed to either RTD or Pos Malaysia offices for road tax renewal. The electronic cover notes system will be operational for new registration and renewal of road tax only whereby physical motor insurance/takaful cover notes/policies will not be required for road tax renewal.

Important notice
Vehicle owners must ensure that they:

provide a copy of their vehicle registration card to their insurance company/takaful operator/agent at the point of purchase of motor insurance/takaful cover;

receive the confirmation of successful transmission of their cover note information to JPJ from their insurance company/takaful operator/agent prior to road tax renewal; and

contact their insurance company/takaful operator/agent for assistance in the event they face difficulties in road tax renewal.

Thing to Know-Motor Insurance- General

When you are involved in an accident, you may either make an own damage claim or a third party claim:

Own damage claim

This refers to making a claim on your own insurance policy. You will lose your NCD entitlement

When notifying your insurance company of the accident, ask about the names of approved workshops near your location to send your vehicle for repair.

The workshop will commence repairs on your vehicle upon the approval of your insurance company.

Submit the fully completed Motor Accident Report Form together with all supporting document as soon as possible to your insurance company.

Upon completion of repairs, you will be informed by the workshop to collect your vehicle.

Third party claim

You may make a third party claim if you did not cause the accident you were involved in(i.e. someone rams into your car because they beat a red light). You will retain your NCD entitlement.

There are two ways of making a third party claim:

Submit the claim directly to the insurance company of the party at fault, or

If you have a comprehensive policy, submit the claim to your insurance company. You are encouraged to submit your claim to your own insurance policy for speedier claims.

Appoint a licensed adjuster to assess the loss. The workshop or the third party insurance company may advise you on this.

As the third party claimant, you must act to minimise your losses.

Submit the adjuster’s report and the fully completed Motor Accident Report Form together with all supporting documents as soon as possible.

You are eligible to claim from the third party insurance company for ‘loss of use’ and compensation of excess. For the ‘loss of use’ of your vehicle under repair, this is based on the adjuster’s recommendation on the number of days required for your car to be repaired. Insurance companies, at their own discretion, may allow an additional seven (7) working days for any unforeseen or unavoidable delay. A standard scale of daily ‘loss of use’ has been specified by PIAM as follows:

Private Use Vehicles
'Loss of Use' / Day

Up to 1500cc RM30
Above 1500cc – 2000cc RM40
Above 2000cc RM50

Commercial Vehicles

Up to 1 ton RM40
Above 1 ton – 2 tons RM60
Above 2 tons RM90
Trailer Lorries RM120
Buses (Private) RM90
Other Buses (Stage/Express) RM180
Taxi/Hire and Drive RM40

Motorcycles

Up to 250cc RM10
Above 250cc RM15

Or, you may claim the cost of renting a replacement vehicle of equivalent type and capacity for the recommended number of days of ‘loss of use’ as evidenced by a receipt from a licensed car rental company.

Theft claims

In terms of a stolen vehicle, there are a few procedures that must be followed:

You must submit a detailed report about the stolen vehicle, including a police report.

After submitting the claim form, you must cooperate fully with your insurance company or its representative during the course of investigation of the theft claim.

In view that the police and your insurance company will require time to investigate your claim, you will receive the offer of settlement from your insurance company within six months from the theft notification or upon completion of police investigation, whichever is earlier.

Traffic Accident. What should I do? General

If you or a person you know is involved in a traffic accident, it is very important to remain calm and not panic at the situation. The steps below will help.

Be calm and do not panic.

If there are injuries, call 999 for assistance.

If there are no injuries, move your vehicle to a safe area away from traffic, where possible.

Note the names and addresses of the other driver(s) involved.

Note the model and vehicle registration number of the vehicle(s) involved.

Note names and addresses of witnesses, if any.

Sketch a simple diagram of the accident scene and the position of each vehicle right before and after the accident (Photos of the accident scene, if available, can be very helpful).

Exchange information on the names of your respective insurance companies / takaful operators.

Do not discuss on whose fault it was. This may complicate the handling of your claims.

If your vehicle needs to be towed, ensure that the vehicle will be sent to the correct workshop. Call your insurance company / takaful operator or its accident hotline number for the appropriate workshop.
Report the accident to the police within 24 hours.

Inform your insurance company / takaful operator even if you do not intend to make a claim. The third party involved in the accident may make a claim against your insurance company / takaful operator which would cause you to lose your no-claims-discount (NCD).
Complete the claims form in full and include any additional relevant information. If in doubt, ask your insurance company / takaful operator for advice.
If your vehicle is damaged, you may either make an own damage claim or a third party claim. For own damage claims, call your insurance company immediately for advice. If your insurance company recommends or requires that repairs be done at a panel / authorised workshop, then take your vehicle there as advised. Your insurance company will reject your claim if your vehicle is sent to a workshop that is not authorised by your insurance company. Your insurance company will send an insurance loss adjuster to assess the damage to your vehicle before authorising the repairs.

FAQs on Medical and Health Insurance - General

FAQs on Medical and Health Insurance

How do I decide on the best plan for me?

The best MHI plan for you is the one that gives you the greatest flexibility and the most benefits for the lowest cost. Unfortunately, there's no such thing as a standard MHI policy to use as the basis for your comparison. As you would when making any major purchase, you'll need to shop around and get several quotes before choosing a plan. Here are a few points to consider:

How co-payments, deductibles, and co-insurance requirements apply?

What are the benefits covered?

What are not covered?

Does the plan cover the health services that you need?

Can you afford the premiums?

Does the plan cover the private hospitals you're currently using?

Does the plan offer family, as well as individual coverage?

Does the plan provide for pre-existing conditions?

What are the important tips when buying a MHI policy?

Firstly, ask about the different types available. Then,

understand the product features, conditions, limitations, exclusions and benefits;

make sure that the coverage taken under the policy is suitable for your needs;

make sure that you can afford the premium payable under the policy;

make sure that you fully and faithfully declare all the facts that you know or ought to know. Otherwise the policy issued may be void and your claims may not be entertained; and

only buy from registered insurance agents or directly from the insurance company.

I notice that some MHI policies contain the 'guaranteed renewal' condition. What does it mean?

‘Guaranteed renewal’ means that the insurance company guarantees the renewal of the policy, subject to the terms and conditions specified in the policy. The renewal premiums payable, however,is not guaranteed nor fixed. In practice, the renewal of the policy is guaranteed until certain events have occurred, such as:

You did not pay your premium or did not pay it on time;

You have misrepresented a material fact, e.g. age or a medical condition, during your application;

You have cancelled the policy;

The total claims of the policy have reached the lifetime limit specified; and

You have attained the coverage age limit.

When will my policy be effective?

As soon as your application is accepted and has been received by the insurance company and the premium duly paid.

Under what circumstances will my cover be cancelled?

On the policy anniversary, or when the total benefits paid have reached the lifetime limit, or when the total benefits paid in any particular year have reached the annual overall limit. The policy may be cancelled if there is a misrepresentation of material fact, e.g. medical condition, during your application.

Are there any exclusions?

Yes, these include pre-existing conditions, HIV leading to AIDS, elective surgery other than medically necessary, psychiatric disorders, congenital abnormalities, hospitalisation for investigatory purposes and routine physical check-up, among others.

Is SARS covered under existing MHI policies?

If your policy is a hospital and surgical insurance policy, you can claim for losses incurred due to SARS because SARS is not one of the conditions excluded under the policy. However, if your policy is a critical illness policy, you are not covered for SARS because SARS is not one of the critical illnesses covered under the policy.

You must promptly notify the local police and the hotel, transportation company or transportation terminal authority, whichever is applicable. You should also take all reasonable measures to protect, save and recover your belongings.

Claims for damage will be paid immediately when proof of such damage is presented to your insurance company. For lost belongings, claims will be paid after the lapse of a reasonable time (normally 30 days) from the day of loss.

What exchange rates will be applicable?

FAQs on Personal Accident - General

FAQs on Personal Accident Insurance

If there are changes to my life profile, must I inform my insurance company?

Yes, you are required to inform your insurance company should there be changes regarding your address, occupation and personal pursuits which would affect your risk profile.

Must I inform my insurance company about other insurance policies that I take?

Yes, you must inform your insurance company of any other insurance policies against accident or incapacity, except for a motor insurance policy.
My friend was covered under a PA policy. He had a fatal accident while riding a motorcycle but the insurance company repudiated the death claim. Why?

Your friend may have taken the standard PA policy which excludes death or injury while operating or riding a two-wheel motor vehicle. However, by paying additional premiums, policy owners can extend their policy coverage to include the policy exclusions.

A claim was made for total and permanent disability (TPD) but was repudiated by the insurance company on the ground that the claimant could still work. What is the definition of TPD?

Under a PA policy, TPD is defined as a disability which prevents the insured from performing any work, occupation or profession. The insurer may have repudiated the claim because there is no evidence that the disability has prevented the insured from performing any type of work at all.

FAQS on HouseOwner/Householder- General

FAQs on Houseowner/Householder Insurance

I have taken a loan to buy an apartment. The financier wants me to buy insurance cover for the apartment, even though I am already paying for the insurance policy taken by the management corporation (MC) on the property. Why must I pay for double insurance? Can I pay for one policy only?

Under the Strata Title Act, it is mandatory for the MC of buildings such as apartments and condominiums to purchase fire insurance policy for the whole building. The individual unit holder is then required to pay to the MC, his/her respective premium portion. If the unit is purchased through a loan, the financiers would also normally require the borrower to obtain an insurance policy for the unit, leading to a situation of double insurance. However, if you have attained the loan from a banking institution under BNM’s supervision, it has been agreed that borrowers will not be required to buy another insurance policy for their apartments or condominiums. Instead, the banking institutions will accept the insurance policy already purchased by the MC subject to certain terms and conditions. If your loan is not from a lending institution under the supervision of BNM, you can negotiate with the institution concerned.

If I own an apartment, how will I be compensated under the master policy taken by the MC in the event of a loss?

In the event of a loss, the insurance company will compensate the MC as the master policy owner. As the unit owner, you can get your compensation from the MC.

What type of policy should I purchase to protect my house and the contents?

The compensation of insurance claims depends on the type of policy that you have purchased. If you have the basic fire policy, you will only be compensated against the loss/damage of the building by fire, lighting or explosion. The houseowners policy provides you with additional cover such as flood, burst pipes etc. In order to protect the contents of your house, you may purchase the householders policy.

I made a theft claim under my householders policy when my maid ran away and took with her some of my jewellery. However the insurance company repudiated my claim. Can the insurance company do this?

One of the basic conditions in a householders policy is that the insurance company will only pay compensation for theft if there has been violent breaking into or out of your house. In this case, since the maid did not break into the house, you will not be eligible for compensation.

I obtained 50% financing for the purchase of my house. The bank required me to purchase insurance cover up to the amount of the loan. Is this adequate cover?

In line with the principle of indemnity, the insurance company will compensate you based on the sum insured or market value of the property at the time of loss, whichever is lower. If you had insured your house at lower than its market value, you are considered to be self-insured for the difference between these values. In this case, in the event of loss/damage, you will be compensated only up to 50%.

There are many items to be insured under a householder policy. How do I substantiate my claims if there has been a loss?

It is very important to be able to provide evidence to support any claim. Make sure that you keep the invoice, bill or payment voucher of such items to substantiate your claim.

What type of insurance policy should I buy to protect my house which is near or on top of a hill?

When a house is near or on top of a hill, there is a higher risk from landslide. As such, it is advisable to ensure that your house insurance policy covers subsidence and landslide. To also protect the contents of your house, you may buy the householders policy.

FAQ on Motor Insurans - General

If I buy a comprehensive motor policy, will all my losses be covered?

Not all losses will be covered by a comprehensive policy. Under a comprehensive policy, you will be covered for claims made by third party or parties for deaths, bodily injuries and property damage caused by your vehicle. You will also be covered for loss of or damage to your vehicle due to fire, theft or any accidental causes. However, there are many exclusions. You should check your policy for these exclusions. You should also note that deaths and bodily injuries of the driver and passengers of your vehicles are not covered under your comprehensive cover.

Why can't I choose to insure my vehicle at any value I think appropriate? When I make a claim, I expect the insurance company to pay me the amount I have insured my vehicle for.

It is essential to insure your vehicle at the market value and not any value you choose to avoid over-insurance or under-insurance.Over-insurance occurs when you insure your vehicle for a sum higher than the market value. When you make a claim, the insurance company will only pay you the market value of your vehicle. If you over-insure your vehicle, you have paid higher but unnecessary premiums.Under-insurance occurs when your sum insured is lower than the market value. In such a case, you are considered to ‘self-insure’ the difference between these two values. Therefore, in the event of damage, you have to bear your insured portion out of the total repair cost yourself. E.g. if you insured your vehicle up to 80% of the market value, the insurance company will only pay 80% of the total repair cost.Always check with the vehicle franchise holder on the market value of your vehicle to avoid under or over-insuring your vehicle. You may ask your insurance company/agent to confirm with the vehicle franchise holder on the appropriate amount of sum insured.

In an accident, when I am not at fault, how can I claim against the party at fault?

You have a choice either to submit your third party claim to the third party insurance company or, if you have a comprehensive policy, to submit your third party claim against your own insurance company. If you submit the claim to your own insurance company, you will not lose your NCD and the claim will be processed more speedily as the company already has your background information. However, you need to submit your claim for ‘compensation for actual repair time’ (CART) claims for compensation of ‘excess’ to the third party insurance company, which is responsible for such claims. The number of days for CART that you can claim is based on the number of days needed for your vehicle to be repaired as determined by the appointed adjuster assessing the damage to your vehicle.

If I am involved in a chain collision accident, who should I claim against?

In a chain collision accident, if there is damage to your vehicle (the procedure is not applicable for deaths and bodily injuries) you should claim from the insurance company of the vehicle immediately behind you and you will not lose your NCD. If your vehicle is the last vehicle in the chain collision, you will not be able to make any claim against the other vehicles involved. However, you can make an own damage claim from your insurance company if you have a comprehensive cover.

Even though my vehicle has been repaired after an accident, its value has gone down. Why can't I claim for depreciation since the accident was not my fault?

This is in line with the principle of indemnity. Your insurance policy will indemnify your loss/damage by putting you back to the similar position just before the accident. You therefore cannot 'profit' from an insurance settlement. When the damaged vehicle is repaired, it is restored to the condition before the accident. Hence, the issue of depreciation should not arise.

Why does the insurance company take such a long time to settle my claim for my stolen vehicle?

The insurance company will normally pay a theft claim within six months or when the police investigations have been completed, whichever is earlier. The time is required for the insurance company as well as the police to conduct their investigations and for the possibility that the vehicle can be recovered during the investigation.

When I made a claim to the insurance company of the vehicle that knocked into my vehicle, the company refused to pay my claim because its policy owner did not make any report. Why is this so?

An insurance policy is a contract between the insurance company and the policy owner. If the policy owner fails to report to the insurance company about an accident, the insurance company will not be able to entertain the claim made by any third party as the company has no contract with the third party. Therefore, the third party insurance company will only be responsible for handling your claim if its policy owner has requested it to step into his/her shoes for the loss/damage caused by him in the accident. However, for the convenience of the general public, insurance companies have agreed to entertain third party claims even though their policy owners fail to make a report. You need to submit the claim for the insurance company's consideration within 14 days from the date of the accident together with the following documents:a) a copy of your police report; b) a copy of the policy owner's police report, if available; c) if (b) is not available, your Statutory Declaration declaring the circumstances of the accident and identifying the policy owner's vehicle as a party to the accident; andd) a copy of the police investigation report or a notification by the police as evidence that the insurance company's policy owner was at fault.

Can the insurance company repudiate claims under the following scenarios?(a) A car lent to a friend who subsequently 'disappeared' with the car.(b) A car that is advertised for sale and one of the potential buyers takes the car for a test drive and fails to return.

These cases are deemed to be acts of criminal breach of trust and cheating. There is also negligence on the part of the car owner in not exercising due care as to whom the property has been entrusted to. Loss/damage arising from such cases are not payable as these are excluded under the insurance contract.
